Warsaw turns into a frozen city once a year and it is today

Every year on the 1st of August. The people of Warsaw pay tribute to the fallen heroes that fought for freedom in 1944 during the Warsaw Uprising. This is called 'Godzina "W"'. Warsaw Uprising was the Largest single military effort taken by any European resistance movement during World War II.

The Warsaw Uprising (Polish: Powstanie Warszawskie) was a major World War II operation by the Polish resistance Home Army (Polish: Armia Krajowa) to liberate Warsaw from Nazi Germany.

The Uprising was timed to coincide with the Soviet Union's Red Army approaching the eastern suburbs of the city and the retreat of German forces. However, the Soviet advance stopped short, enabling the Germans to regroup and demolish the city while defeating the Polish resistance, which fought for 63 days with little outside support.

If you are interesed in movies on this matter you can watch Miasto 44' (City 44) is a must watch movie as the events presented in ths movie actually happened in real life. Survivors of that events described the movie as very accurate and emotional.

What happened after the Warsaw Uprising?

Well...this:

This short film below, is a trailer for the first ever digital historical reconstruction of an entire city. It is a simulation of the flight of a Liberator plane over the destroyed Warsaw of 1945. The image suggestively conveys the horror and the scale of destruction of the capital city after the World War II. The complete, longer version of it is presented to the visitors of the Warsaw Uprising Museum in 3D.

The planned destruction of Warsaw refers to the largely-realized plans by Nazi Germany to raze the city.

The plan was put into full motion after the Warsaw Uprising in 1944. The uprising had infuriated German leaders who now wanted to make an example of the city, which they had long before selected for a major reconstruction as part of their plans to Germanise Eastern Europe.
